Parallel

Parallel - Jina Wallwork
I wonder if there is another like me. Do we exist in different lands, facing the same struggles and thinking the same thoughts? Perhaps we face the same journey unaware of each other's existence. I would feel no need to seek out my double. we can walk a path that is parallel without the need or desire for those lines to cross. In solitude I find myself, therefore I have no need to find myself within another person. Beautiful connections are made within our differences. I don't seek people who are just like me.

Within the Shadows

Within the Shadows - Jina Wallwork

We make our future plans with a clouded perception. We gaze into the darkness and give our imagination the space to roam. I can look into the abyss and ask what will come from within those shadows. I can question what those future moments will involve, but I cannot know for certain. I make my plans knowing that the future may not accept them.

A Small Room

A Small Room - Jina Wallwork
I can hear only my own voice. The chaos sits patiently at the door waiting for my return. These four walls create a moment of calm where I sit in seclusion. I can rest within my own energy and explore the tapestry of emotion that is unique to me. This room is small, however the space feels endless. I am free to be myself.

Balancing My Emotions

Balancing My Emotions - Jina Wallwork
I feel every emotion. I try to understand their nature, but the complexity overwhelms me. I must go within myself and draw my attention to every peak within the turbulent landscape of my feelings. There is an angry red and I look deeply into its presence while I shape its tiny gaze into a broader perspective. I cannot control my emotions however I am able to connect them to my existing knowledge and experience. Anger will not dominate my feelings, because I value the lessons that came with its presence. I am filled with a variety of sensations and through self reflection I find balance.

Courage

Courage - Jina Wallwork
Courage can be loud and visible to all or it can exist in the most personal of moments. Courage is facing our fears no matter what they may be. When a fear is shared it becomes easier to recognize a courageous act. Most people fear burning buildings and will admire those who tackle the blaze. Not everyone will know the difficulty of your decisions or the hard conversations you have needed to initiate. We all face moments that push us to the limits of our own strength. There will be no medals and no parade to appreciate your struggle. Some courageous acts are invisible to others. Fear highlights every risk and with courage we make the decisions that are necessary. I will not see everyone’s personal struggle, but I will know that it is present. So many powerful acts of courage have been disguised as a small choice.

Shatter

Shatter - Jina Wallwork
It isn't over until she delivers her song. This bird must stretch her voice beyond the cage to experience the joy of existing beyond its metal bars. Her music roams free and one day she will do the same. Her voice expresses the words that need to be spoken and the echo shatters the illusion of being trapped. She can leave at anytime knowing that her world has changed forever. She is free.

The Desperate Man

The Desperate Man (after Gustave Courbet) - Jina Wallwork
She talks of the problems they share and attempts to repair the cracks that are becoming wider. She wraps her words in kindness but can’t control how they are received. The wounded lion can’t maintain control over his emotions. Her words cut deep and are accompanied by a feeling that pollutes his self worth. He wants to express this feeling, however his words betray him. He wants to declare his pain and torment. Instead, he attempts to deliver the emotion to her. He believes that if she feels his pain she will attempt to alleviate his suffering, but he is incapable of a level of expression that would initiate an empathetic response, so he gathers his rage and speaks in the only manner he knows. His words intertwine with cruelty and are delivered with spite. He utilizes her perception of herself to inflict real damage. Where she believes she is ugly he declares it to be true. He enhances her negative gaze and then asks her to look at herself.

He wants her to feel his pain and devastation. She tries to appear strong as she crumbles from within. She is polluted by his emotions, although she does not understand him. She is overwhelmed by her own pain and can no longer recognize his. This lion’s roar expresses very little truth. It echoes within her feelings of self worth as she finally walks away.

Alone

Alone - Jina Wallwork
Loneliness is not the same as solitude. You can spend time in seclusion and enjoy it as a moment of peaceful reflection. Loneliness stands in contradiction to that solace, because it is a state of mind where you feel that you are not understood by the people who surround you. The belief cripples your expression and it makes it harder for others to comprehend your words. Loneliness is not removed by the presence of other people; loneliness is removed by feeling grateful for the connections that you have.

Pride

Pride - Jina Wallwork
Sexuality is like a compass, because it guides us through a landscape of friendship towards a place of romantic love. I value friendship and I know that it can include a profound love, but it is distant from the sexual passionate love that unites soul mates. When I tell the world I am gay I reveal my compass. It is an act of hope and vulnerability. I am sharing my belief in love. Sometimes my faith will be shaken by heartache, but my colors will not fade. I am proud to accept the authority of my own heart.

Stepping Stones

Stepping Stones - Jina Wallwork

Don't ignore your anger, because you cannot suppress it beneath your feet. As you stomp upon each thought it will compress the rage into solid form. Your temper will become stepping stones that form a pathway towards destinations that you would never choose with your rational mind. These emotions boil in your blood and demand your attention. Anger doesn't arrive to claim that all is fine within your personal world. This emotion demands your gaze and requests an audience. There are issues that must be dealt with; there are decisions that need to be made. This rage has arisen because your emotions need to be heard. Listen to your own heartbeat and express your feelings when the time is right.

I Can See

I Can See - Jina Wallwork

Is a friendship possible? We could share a thousand words of comfortable irrelevance while we pretend that no other words desire to be spoken. I could hold them back while my heart burns with passion and longing. I could force my conversation to adapt to the constraints of the situation. I could be her friend. I could fulfill that role knowing that I will never love another. I will not ask for anything beyond a platonic relationship. My thoughts will learn to accept that my fantasy will never become flesh. My heart will come to understand the limited array of choices. It must disguise its beat or become isolated from its one true direction.

I don’t need to conceal the shape of my heart. She has seen my love and she believes that a friendship will cause me pain. She cares too much to inflict such anguish. She has caged her love and placed it out of reach. She tries to hide it, but I can see clearly.

If she had accepted my offer of friendship I would know that she feels neither love nor compassion. Under those circumstances I could have easily accepted a platonic relationship. I would come to believe that my heart was deceived by fantasy and I would therefore seek the genuine article. She doesn’t speak of love, but her actions reveal her emotions. I can see her heart and she is incapable of hiding its content. I can see her love.

Holding Back The Tide

Holding Back The Tide - Jina Wallwork
What are your goals in life? You could set targets that are based on the amount of remuneration and admiration you desire to receive, but it will lead you towards disappointment. You will feel as though you are holding back the tide while the sea pushes you down. There will be resistance that your goal refuses to accommodate.

I have only one goal in life. I want to be the best version of me. It is a goal that accepts my circumstances, resources and abilities. I have no competition, because there is only one of me. I am driven towards self improvement and I am the only judge and critic. There is no way to measure success or failure, but it is a goal that encourages me to strive. I travel with the tide; I don’t fight against it.

Their Night

Their Night - Jina Wallwork
(Jina's Version of Starry Night by Van Gogh)
Think of the lovers as they hold each other close. They feel elated by the love that permeates their relationship. They are united by the emotions they share. Let them have their night. Let them believe that the world exists only for them.

An Elephant's Memory

An Elephant's Memory - Jina Wallwork

I remember counting down the seconds before every meeting. Her smile would cause my emotions to dance and I felt truly happy. It was the kind of happiness that I believed only existed within the echoes of fairy tales, but I came to discover the truth of its existence. The ecstasy was beyond anything I have ever experienced and within my thoughts it exists as a lost piece of perfection.

I declared my love and I watched as my words cut away the friendship that had brought me such joy. She responded by creating the distance that has now come to define me. I feel regret, because I can travel into my memories and see other actions I could have taken. I now understand the true value of my own silence. I used to have something beautiful, but now these memories haunt me.

Trapped within this moment I am incapable of changing the past. I know that I must create new memories, but I cannot reach the joy that I once felt. If the past was forgotten I could believe that such happiness is merely a fantasy. I would no longer compare each joy with the intense emotional pleasure that I have experienced.

The experience of true happiness has changed me, because I have witnessed great possibilities and the routine miracles that make life magical. I am unsure whether the experience has been a blessing or a curse, because now it is only a memory.

The Next Move

The Next Move - Jina Wallwork
Aim for the heavens and you will touch the stars. Make your dreams grand and impossible. Dreams are not a glimpse of the future; they are your hearts compass. They reveal the direction you need to take. Your next step should stand in complete contrast to the fantasy of your dream. It must be realistic and constrained by practical limitations. It must contain thought, strategy and courage.

Focus on one step at a time, because the journey is long. Set a pace you can maintain and accept that difficulties will arise. There are no guarantees or promises, because these would not inspire the hard work that is necessary to achieve success. Step forward and stay strong.

DDP Yoga

You may have already come across this inspirational video about Arthur. The yoga teacher that helped him to change his life was Diamond Dallas Page. DDP is a former pro wrestler who developed his own brand of Yoga. I do DDP Yoga almost everyday. I workout to his videos and for the rest of the day I have more energy and focus. I do these workouts because they make me feel good. DDP is a brilliant and funny entertainer, but he is also an inspirational speaker. When I met DDP I saw many people thanking him for DDP Yoga. They would share their stories of weight loss and recovery from injury.
Its Me, Its Me and DDP

On Saturday I had the opportunity to workout with DDP. After the workout I wanted to get a photo of me and DDP doing the 'Balancing Leg Lift'. Its a move I'm comfortable with, but it was a different environment and I knew there was a possibility that I could fall over in front of DDP and a room full of people. I thought to myself, if I fall I will look back and laugh. If I don't fall I will have a memento of a great day, but if I don't ask him for the photo I'll regret it.

I know that in this blog post I have strayed away from my usual posts about my artwork, but I want to say thank you to DDP. I value DDP Yoga and I want to share it with others.
